- It's easy to make the 3800 exactly the notebook you want, thanks to a variety of Intel Celeron and Pentium III mobile processors. Our review unit came equipped with a 600MHz version of the mobile Celeron and 64MB of RAM. A smaller chunk of memory (32MB) is standard, but upgrading to 64MB costs just $100 at Dell's Web site. You can add as much as 480MB if you like, bringing the total to a whopping 512MB. The standard 5GB hard drive is big enough for basic use, and you can upgrade that as well (up to a 32GB drive).
- 3800 even had a larger-than-standard active-matrix display, a 14.1-inch XGA beauty that costs just $200 more than the usual 12.1-inch SVGA model. The screen takes its orders from an ATI Technologies Rage Mobility-M1 video chipset with 2X AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) support and 8MB of video memory. The modular media bay on its front edge houses either a 24X CD-ROM drive or a 1.44MB diskette drive (both included) at your discretion, and you can easily swap in options such as an 8X DVD-ROM drive or an LS-120 SuperDisk drive.
